Grower Fresh Pumpkin

For almost two decades, Countdown has sourced its Grower Fresh pumpkins direct from Wairarapa-based grower, Somerset Farms.

And according to head grower Tony Phelps, now’s the perfect time of year to be enjoying it.

“Pumpkins are fabulous eating in winter. They’re firm, they’re bright, they’re sweet, and they’re plentiful – so as well as great eating, they’re great buying.”

Tony’s also a big believer in Countdown’s Grower Fresh promise – although with pumpkin it’s a slightly different process.

“Grower Fresh in terms of pumpkin, is actually all about the integrity of the fruit.” To which Countdown buyer Grant Robinson adds, “It actually keeps maturing. The flavour and the colour gets better up to about two months after they harvest it. The pumpkin we sell in winter’s got really bright colour and amazing flavour.

Another thing Tony loves about pumpkin is its versatility. “You can have it in every course of the meal. You can have a soup, a bake, a mash, a roast; Jill my wife makes the very best pumpkin pie.”
